K-Netizens Clash Over Male vs. Female Idol Visual Expectations

A controversial post circulating on a Korean online community has triggered heated reactions after harshly criticizing the appearance of male K-pop idols.

The original poster (OP) boldly titled the post “Male idols are seriously ugly” and listed numerous idols from top groups like RIIZE, SEVENTEEN, BTS, NCT, and more, claiming that “at least two members in every boy group are unattractive.”

The OP compared male idols to female idols, stating, “Girl groups only have one unattractive but talented member at most—and even they are average at worst. There are no female idols as ugly as the average male idol.”

This generalization sparked outrage among fans, especially since the post directly named well-known male idols. Supporters of these groups quickly called out the post for being “unnecessarily malicious,” “appearance-shaming,” and “inviting fan wars.”

Some commenters tried to defuse the situation, stating:

  • Honestly, the level of “ugliness” between male and female idols is on a completely different scale ㅋㅋ. Even the female idols who get criticized for being unattractive still look somewhat okay, but for male idols, some are so bad you literally go “wow…”—no joke, there are ones who look worse than random guys on the street.
  • It’s hilarious how Sohee from RIIZE always comes up first in discussions like this.
  • First of all, their facial features aren’t even in the right place.
  • But honestly, it’s the same in the acting industry too.
  • Also, there’s a thing with female-dominated communities where they bash female idols no matter how pretty they are. It’s typical behavior—they even post saying they don’t get why someone as gorgeous as Jang Wonyoung is considered pretty. That’s just how they are, haha.
  • Ugly male idols are something else entirely. Short like hobbits (some 1st-tier idols are only around 160 cm tall), horrible facial features, and on top of that, they let themselves go and gain weight ㅋㅋ. Even having just one of these would be bad, but there are idols who check all three boxes ㅋㅋ. Meanwhile, female idols get judged to the nanometer if they gain even a little weight—now that’s misogyny.

While some users dismissed the post as typical online trolling, others expressed concern that posts like these perpetuate toxic beauty standards and fan rivalries. Many emphasized the need for a more respectful, performance-centered appreciation of K-pop artists, regardless of gender.
